A tiny newish outfit coming out of McLaren Vale are Luke and Caleigh from Year Wines. Caleigh came over from Canada to do a vintage 5 years ago, met a boy and has never left. Now her and Luke have 2 kids, a place in McLaren Vale and Year Wines. Luke has a background in winemaking. He studied in both SA and WA and has done many vintages at some of the bigger wineries around South Australia. Caleigh has a passion for making delicious things, as well as making awesome wine she works a cheese shop in the Central Market in Adelaide, and helps out with the cheese making classes at TAFE.
Now in their 3rd vintage Year Wines have upped their production, they know their grapes and settled into their house style. The Wines are medium bodied, juicy and delicious. They are big believers in minimal intervention and let the grapes speak for themselves. They do not add anything except for a touch of sulphur before bottling. Using a gentle approach to their winemaking a delicate softness comes through in the bottle. They are full of personality but not at all confronting. Definitely wines worth a try and definitely a producer to watch.
Year Wines | Touriga Grenache 2014 | McLaren Vale SA $28
A medium bodied juicy blend of 70% Touriga to 30% Grenache. The grapes are fermented together in an old french oak barrel with the head knocked out. The winemaking is very gentle, everything is done by hand and this comes through in the gentleness of the wines. The wine is fresh and juicy, a lick of spice on the finish, a touch of tobacco with a beautiful silky tannin.
Year Wines | Grenache 2014 | McLaren Vale SA. $28
This is an awesome light, juicy, fun Grenache from McLaren Vale. A bit of whole bunch fermentation gives this wine a bit of grip and gives it a cheeky personality. Bright juicy berries and a little bit of dark cherries and cinnamon spice. This wine is very easy drinking and luscious.
